Stop! These 3 Course Creation Myths Are Holding You Back (Like They Did Me)

Have you ever had that moment when you realized that major things that you thought you knew were wrong? That happened to me with course creation, and it turned out to be the best thing that could have happened – both for me and my students.
There are three major misconceptions I had about creating online courses, and why being wrong about them actually opened up incredible opportunities.
If you're thinking about creating a course (or struggling with one you've already built), this might just be the nudge you need to do things differently. The third one held me back for years.
TLDR - if you're interested in creating an extremely profitable and scalable online course to release income, impact and freedom you can unpack how here
The Market Saturation Myth
"But someone's already created a course about this!"
That was my first wrong assumption – thinking I needed to come up with a completely unique course idea that had never been done before. I spent months agonizing over trying to find that "blue ocean" opportunity, only to realize I was looking at it all wrong.
Here's the truth: The fact that other courses exist in your niche is actually a GOOD thing. It's proof that:
- There's a market willing to pay for this knowledge
- There's genuine demand for this transformation
- You can make money in this space
Think about it – there are 650 million online English speakers in the developed world alone. The market is plenty big enough for another course on your topic. What matters isn't being first – it's being different.
In my Impact and Income Accelerator program, I teach 6 specific ways to differentiate your course from others in the market. But here's the key insight: You don't need to revolutionize your entire industry. You just need to bring your unique perspective, experience, and approach to solving your students' problems.
Your potential students don't want the only course on a topic – they want the right course for them. And for some of them, that's going to be yours.
The Perfect Course Myth
My second wrong assumption was thinking I needed to spend months creating the "perfect" course before launching.
I thought I would disappear into my content creation cave, emerging months later with perfectly edited videos. But I was worried that if I did that no-one would watch them!
But I learned that that's completely the wrong way to go about it. Instead of spending months creating content in isolation, I:
- Pre-sell the course concept first giving 'founder members' a discount which they appreciate
- Run it live initially to gather real-time feedback
- Refine the content based on actual student questions
- Only then create the final recorded version
One of my students recently tried this approach and sold 9/10 place of their first cohort in a few days. All they had was an outline, some initial slides created, a clear transformation they knew they could deliver because they'd helped people before and a structured plan to get their students there.
The Massive Following Myth
This was perhaps my biggest relief: discovering I was wrong about needing a huge following to succeed with courses.
I used to think I needed:
- 10,000+ social media followers
- A massive email list
- Constant content on every platform
- Viral posts and endless engagement
The reality? Small, focused audiences are more powerful than large unfocussed ones. Instead of trying to appeal to everyone, focus on serving a specific group of people with a specific problem.
I launched my first course to just 200 email subscribers. Because I'd had spent time understanding exactly what my audience needed (rather than building a generic course for everyone), my conversion rate was higher than many creators with 10x their audience size.
Why This Is Good News
Here's why this is actually great news:
- You don't need to be everywhere. Focus on one primary channel where your ideal students hang out.
- You don't need months of preparation. Start with a live version and improve it based on real feedback.
- You don't need to be totally unique. You just need to be different to attract students who are needing that difference.
The Truth About Course Creation
The reality is that course creation isn't about having the most comprehensive content or the biggest audience. It's about:
- Understanding exactly what transformation your students want
- Creating the shortest path to that transformation
- Delivering it in a way that actually gets them to take action
